Travelling abroad while renewing your permit

According to Article 5 of RD 557/2011, non-EU citizens who want to enter Spain from a country outside the Schengen area while applying for an extension of their residence permit or a new foreigner ID card (TIE) will need to apply for a return permit ("autorización de regreso").

The return permit will be valid for no more than 90 days from the expiration of the residence or stay permit if requested before it expires.

If requested after the residence or stay permit has expired, the return permit will be valid for no more than 90 days from the date it was granted.

It is valid for only one trip.

The return permit will be issued by the National Police Stations, you will need to apply for an appointment.
