Health card

The public health system provides comprehensive access to those who have a contract in Spain. Once you have obtained your social security number, you have to go to the Primary Care Center (CAP) that’s located nearby your domicile to apply for the card that will allow you to be assisted: https://catsalut.gencat.cat/ca/coneix-catsalut/acces-sistema-salut/latsi/obtencio-tsi

Here you will know which CAP belongs to your neighbourhood: https://catsalut.gencat.cat/ca/centres-sanitaris/

For your family members' health coverage, you must include them as beneficiaries of your Social Security: https://pssc.seg-social.es/pssc-app

Also remember:

  • Centros de Atención Primaria - CAP (Primary Care Centers). This is the first place you should go when you have a health problem. They offer health and social care. You must be a TSI cardholder in order to access to their services for free.

  • Public Hospitals. You should go to a Hospital only in case of an emergency. If you face a common health problem you should go first to your nearest CAP. If the CAP health staff considers that it is necessary they will refer you to the Hospital.

Private hospitals and clinics. If you have acquired private health insurance, check the documentation to find out which health centers or hospitals you are assigned to,

PLEASE NOTE THAT in case of emergency, you should call the emergency phone number 061.
