The European scientific community is making a concerted effort to attract top researchers from around the world, particularly those affected by recent uncertainties in U.S. research policies. As part of this initiative, Europe is actively creating opportunities to welcome leading scientists seeking stability and support for their work. One such success story is Dr. Audrey Sawyer, a distinguished hydrologist who has recently joined the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) to lead groundbreaking research on river contaminants.

Funded with nearly one million euros, Dr. Sawyer, formerly based in the United States, is now at the forefront of innovative research at UPC, focusing on understanding and mitigating the presence of pollutants in river systems. Her work is instrumental in addressing environmental challenges, ensuring cleaner water sources, and developing sustainable solutions for water management.

Although Audrey moved to Europe before the change in the U.S. government, the political shift in the White House now opens the door for Europe to take the lead in attracting and retaining talent. While Europe may still not match the funding levels of the U.S., it offers stability, excellent working conditions, mobility across European countries, and the presence of prestigious universities, making it an increasingly attractive destination for researchers worldwide.

UPC aligns with this direction and takes pride in attracting world-class researchers like Dr. Sawyer. As Europe intensifies its efforts to attract top scientific minds, UPC remains at the forefront, ensuring that researchers like Dr. Audrey Sawyer have the resources and support needed to make meaningful contributions to global challenges. Her work exemplifies not only the university's dedication to sustainability, research excellence and international collaboration but also the continent’s strategic commitment to reinforcing its position as a leading hub for world-class scientific talent.
