The Project

Green hydrogen is a key technology in the energy transition, yet the thermal management of water electrolysers remains a critical bottleneck limiting efficiency and durability, especially under intermittent renewable operation.

The THYPEL project aims to develop a comprehensive thermal management (CTM) strategy to reduce thermal losses, improve dynamic performance, and enhance electrolyser lifetime. Thermal losses can reach up to 50% in certain technologies under transient conditions, and warm-up phases after shutdown carry significant energy penalties.

The Research

This PhD will combine CFD modeling, Balance of Plant modeling, and system integration to:

  • Predict internal thermal gradients with experimentally validated tools.

  • Develop fast numerical models for plant-level integration.

  • Design optimized thermal control strategies.

The Opportunity

The project offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of heat transfer, hydrogen technologies, and energy systems, contributing directly to improving the efficiency and scalability of green hydrogen production.
